More than 700 govt officials involved in fraud16 May 2006 The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) says it has identified more than 700 civil servants in Mpumalanga who are defrauding government of social grants. Peter Bishop, a project manager of the SIU, says the Mpumalanga department of health and social services has lost about R2.1 million between mid-2005 and April 2006 in this way. Bishop says during this period 105 civil servants have appeared before the court on charges relating to defrauding the social grant system. Forty-one of these civil servants have pleaded guilty and 175 have signed an admission of debt agreement where they will have to pay the money back. Bishop says its difficult to put a figure of what was, and how much has been defrauded of government, but they have a methodology that they are applying to try and clarify issues. Bishop says in Mpumalanga they have identified 769 officials on the system that are defrauding the system and the annual value of that is about R2.1 million. He says the SIU has reason to believe that there is also syndicate involved in defrauding the department of social grants in Mpumalanga.
