Owners of fraudulent driver's licenses warned

The special investigating unit (SIU) has again warned motorists who obtained their driver's licences fraudulently to obtain legal documents. The SIU said yesterday 601 people had already been arrested in this regard.

The unit has already identified almost 25 000 invalid licences, and found evidence of corruption at 42 licence testing centres. The unit began its investigations in 2005. Faiek Davids, the unit's deputy head, says the fraudulently-obtained licenses will be cancelled.

"The objective of our investigation is to assess the number of invalid licences that have been issued and make recommendations for the cancellation thereof and essentially take those drivers off the road. As you know, the credibility of our driver’s licences are important both nationally and internationally," Davids said.
