Mr Leonard Gaoretelelwe Lekgetho is a dedicated public servant, investigator, and leader whose career has been shaped by a deep commitment to justice, integrity, and service. Appointed Acting Head of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) on 1 February 2026 by the President of South Africa, he now leads South Africa’s flagship anti-corruption agency with a clear vision: to protect public resources and restore trust in state institutions.
Mr Lekgetho earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of North West, followed by a B.Sc. Honours in Geographic Information Systems from the aforementioned institution. His passion for law and accountability led him to complete an LLB through the University of South Africa, rounding out a rich academic portfolio that also includes Postgraduate Diplomas in Criminal Justice, Cyber Law, and advanced project management.
Mr Lekgetho is not new to leadership at the SIU. For over 20 years, he has held nearly every investigative and leadership role within the SIU, including Chief Forensic Investigator, Assistant Project Manager, Project Manager, Chief National Investigations Officer and Chief Operations Officer. His work has spanned high-profile corruption cases, forensic audits, cybercrime investigations, and strategic oversight of national and provincial operations. He’s also served as a Special Investigator with the Directorate of Special Operations, also known as the Scorpions.
Mr Lekgetho’s training is as diverse as his experience. He’s completed investigation training at the FBI Academy in Washington, D.C., and has completed specialised programmes in cyber forensics, supply chain management, and anti-corruption leadership through institutions such as CSIR, Deloitte, and the Commonwealth Africa Anti-Corruption Centre.
Known for his calm authority, collaborative spirit, and sharp strategic mind, Mr Lekgetho is not only a leader but a mentor who builds teams, nurtures talent, and inspires excellence. His appointment as Acting Head of the SIU is a testament to his integrity, resilience, and lifelong dedication to public service.
